Short summary for practitioners in English on the (final or expected) outcomes (1000-1500 characters, word count – no spaces). This summary should be as interesting as possible for farmers/end-users, using a direct and easy understandable language and pointing out entrepreneurial elements which are particularly relevant for practitioners. Research oriented aspects which do not help the understanding of the practice itself should be avoided. |
Short description of the ‘Good Practice’: Coöperatie Burgerboerderijen reestablishes the contact between citizens and the source of their food: farmers. Citizens can participate in the initiative in different ways: as volunteers on one of the participating farms, mills or bakeries; by directly buying food from participating producers, by financially supporting projects on the farms or other businesses in the collective. Citizens farms (burgerboerderijen) are the corner stone of this initiative. This is the physical location where farmers and citizens come together. Specific examples of education and awareness raising practices are farm study visits that are organized on the citizen farms (burgerboerderijen). For example, on 4 April 2019, an excursion was organized with 30 participating citizens, farmers, a nature organisation and land managers on one of the citizen farms. The excursion included a guided visit of the farm, a farm lunch and two workshops around the topics of how to improve engagement of citizens for their natural / rural environments and what makes a farm a citizens farm. |
Main results/outcomes of the activity (expected or final): | |
The main practical recommendation(s): what would be the main added value/benefit or opportunities to the end-user if the generated knowledge were implemented? How can the practitioner make use of the results? The main goals of the initiative are a fairer food chain, limiting unwanted intensification and upscaling of production, limiting the power of supermarkets in the chain, improving biodiversity and reducing food waste. These goals are achieved by bringing together farmers, citizens and other stakeholders through informational meetings, farm visits, and discussions to jointly think about solutions to the current challenges of the food chain the the rural environment. |

Pearls, Puzzles, Proposals? | Pearls: Connecting local producers to citizens in an effort to transform the local food system towards circularity. Puzzles: Need for transparency. What do investors gain in return? How is decision-making organized? Who owns what? Do consumers / investors / volunteers / farmers share in the value creation if a project becomes successful? is there a possibility for guarantees or accreditation of the projects? Proposals: Improve transparency of initiatives and contribute with lessons learned to (local) political agendas. |
